Wolfgangsee is one of countless glacial lakes in the heart of Austria’s Salzkammergut region. Towns, villages and mountain resorts such as Sankt Gilgen, Ried, Sankt Wolfgang or Strobl stretch along the lake. We visited two of these cities, which I will tell you about below.

The lake stretches over a huge surface and is surrounded by mountains that are perfectly reflected in the clear sheen of the water.
The snow-capped mountain peaks accentuate the gorgeous scenery, and if you want a quiet vacation away from the pollution of big cities, you will surely find the perfect place here.
Sankt Wolfgang is a small mountain town located only 50 kilometers from Salzburg. You can take a walk through the narrow streets, among guesthouses, restaurants, shops, hotels and houses with beautifully painted facades.
Because the Christmas season had already passed, we didn’t have the opportunity to visit the Christmas Market, but the ornaments and Christmas lights were still there and reminded us of the holiday.
Going down the gentle slopes you can easily reach the shores of Lake Wolfgang from where you can admire the city. We took a ferry for which we paid €16/person/round trip and took a short walk to Sankt Gilgen.
Sankt Gilgen is one of the small towns on the western shore of Lake Wolfgang and also a mountain resort. It is located about 30 kilometers from Salzburg, and the ferry ride from St. Wolfgang took around 30-40 minutes, during which time you can drink tea, coffee or wine and admire the beautiful scenery.
Once you arrive in Sankt Gilgen, you can cross the town of particular beauty on foot in just a few hours. Whether you’re walking along the lake shore or into the old town on the cobbled streets, you’ll be impressed by everything that comes your way.
Near the lake is the house where the Mozart‘s mother was born and where his sister lived. Portraits of the composer’s mother and sister are drawn on one of the exterior walls of the house.
Moving forward, you reach Mozartplatz where you will find the Rathaus (Town Hall) – a special building in front of which there is a small fountain with a bronze statue of Mozart.
From Sankt Gilgen you can take the cable car to the top of the Zwölferhorn, at 1522 meters, from where you can admire the city, the ridges that surround the lakes, but also Wolfgangsee, Mondsee and Atersee. Details on the timetable or prices can be found here.Â
What conclusion did we draw after visiting a small region of Austria? – here you can find splendid places with wonderful landscapes, villages with a fairy tale atmosphere and welcoming people. If I have convinced you, stop thinking and prepare your bags! For us it was a wonderful experience that we will definitely repeat, possibly during the summer.🙂
