After a 4 and a half hour drive from\u00a0New York<\/a><\/em> we arrived in Washington<\/em>.\u00a0We had the accommodation three metro stations from the center, so we bought\u00a0the SmarTrip Card<\/em><\/a>: it costs $30\/person and allows unlimited Metro and Metrobus transportation for 3 consecutive days.<\/span><\/p>\n

What did we visit in Washington DC?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the sights are located around the\u00a0National Mall<\/strong> park, bordered by the museums that are part of\u00a0the Smithsonian Institution<\/em>. Although the park seems quite small, you need two, three days to visit all the attractions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Smithsonian Institution<\/strong>\u00a0was founded in 1846 and is the largest museum complex and center of education and research in the world.\u00a0Entrance to the museums is free, but due to the pandemic and restrictions we needed a reservation.\u00a0You can find the opening hours and address of the museums on\u00a0the institution’s official\u00a0website<\/a>.<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History<\/strong>\u00a0contains 1.7 million objects that depict the history of the American people.\u00a0Among the most interesting exhibits are\u00a0Abraham Lincoln<\/em>\u00a0‘s hat or the outfits of the first ladies of the\u00a0USA.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Smithsonian American Art Museum<\/strong>\u00a0is also not to be missed\u00a0if you are an art lover.\u00a0The museum is divided into\u00a0the East<\/em>\u00a0Building and\u00a0the West Building<\/em>\u00a0and houses one of the largest collections of American art in the world, ranging from early American art to contemporary art and photography.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Smithsonian Institution Building (Castle)<\/strong> is a tourist information center of sorts for the Smithsonian Institution<\/em>.\u00a0Inside the building there are interactive displays and maps of the complex’s museums, and at the entrance there is a crypt with the grave of\u00a0James Smithson<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 the founder of the\u00a0Smithsonian\u00a0<\/em>Institution<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History<\/strong>\u00a0is the third most visited museum in the world and features a collection of over 140 million exhibits.\u00a0Each piece reflects a specific moment in space and time: fossils, stuffed animals, artifacts, meteorites, rocks, fossils, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the most impressive exhibits is\u00a0The Hope Diamond<\/strong>\u00a0(one of the world’s most famous jewels dating back nearly four centuries. The diamond weighs 45.52 carats (approx. 9 grams) and comes from\u00a0India<\/em>. The diamond’s unique blue color is the main which is why most people think it’s priceless. However, the value is estimated to be around a quarter of a billion dollars).<\/span><\/p>\n
