A year ago I visited a small part of the cities of\u00a0the Mosel valley<\/strong> and wrote some articles on the theme “Vacation on the Mosel River Valley<\/em>” (Trier<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Cochem<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Eltz Castle<\/em><\/a>) and were so delighted by the gorgeous landscapes with vineyards and medieval castles, so this year we decided to go back and explore the riverside towns and villages and follow some of the hiking trails that this wonderful area has to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n

First let me tell you a little about the\u00a0Mosel<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a river that flows for a distance of 545 kilometers;\u00a0has its source in\u00a0the Vosges Mountains<\/em>\u00a0in\u00a0France<\/em>, crosses\u00a0Luxembourg<\/em>\u00a0and flows into the\u00a0Rhine<\/em>\u00a0at\u00a0Koblenz<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in\u00a0Germany<\/em>;\u00a0it crosses the German territory for a distance of 208 kilometers, and the small towns that have developed on its banks, the cultural treasures of the\u00a0Middle Ages<\/em>, the vineyards on the steep walls of the hills through which the river sneaks and the world-renowned wines attract year after year thousands of tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n

We rented an apartment at a\u00a0<\/span>holiday home<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Bad Bertrich<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(somewhere between\u00a0<\/span>Koblenz<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Trier<\/span><\/em><\/a>), where we were greeted with a bottle of\u00a0<\/span>Riesling<\/span><\/em> wine (a white wine specific to the area, which, in terms of importance for quality wines, is usually included in the top three types of white wine along with <\/span>Chardonnay <\/span><\/em>and\u00a0<\/span>Sauvignon blanc<\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are a hiking lover, there are different routes to follow, such as the\u00a0Moselsteig<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0the Geierlayschleife <\/strong><\/a>or\u00a0the Traumpfade<\/a> Im Rhein-Mosel-Eifel-Land<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0On their websites you can find maps, brochures, tips and many interesting details depending on the type of route chosen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trails are well marked, you can’t get lost;\u00a0there are maps and leaflets on the way, car parks in case you are driving or very well laid out camping areas especially for those coming with caravans.\u00a0In all the villages you can find holiday homes, guesthouses, wineries and restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

On the first day we went to\u00a0<\/span>Bremm<\/span><\/strong>, being the closest to the accommodation (20 km).\u00a0<\/span>Bremm<\/em> is a small town with approximately 850 inhabitants and is located at the foot of the steepest vineyard in Europe<\/em>, in the heart of the hilly\u00a0Calmont<\/a><\/em> region.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We ventured to the top of the\u00a0Calmont<\/em>\u00a0hill (on the\u00a0Calmont Klettersteig<\/em> trail), at a height of 378 meters, to see one of the most breathtaking views of the wine town and the perfect bend of the Mosel river.\u00a0Along the route there are several viewpoints (Vier Seen Blick<\/em>,\u00a0Gipfelkreuz<\/em>,\u00a0Moselschleife Bremm Aussichtspunkt<\/em>) and relaxation areas with benches.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next day we stopped a little on the banks of the\u00a0<\/span>Mosel<\/span><\/em>, in\u00a0<\/span>\u00dcrzig an der Mosel<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a picturesque town surrounded by forests and vineyards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We walked along the main boulevard and through the narrow medieval streets with wineries and places to taste the local wine, and then headed to\u00a0Bernkastel-Kues<\/strong>\u00a0where we would spend most of the rest of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Bernkastel-Kues<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is often called the heart\u00a0<\/span>of the Middle Mosel<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and is thus considered the most popular town in the area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
