The capital of Bavaria is a cocktail of tourist attractions with a long tradition.\u00a0<\/span>The Bavarian atmosphere is completed by the well-preserved old town, museums, parks and of course lots of beer.<\/span><\/p>\n

BMW, FC Bayern<\/span><\/em>\u00a0or the incomparable\u00a0<\/span>Oktoberfest<\/span><\/em>\u00a0are just a few names that make Munich known worldwide.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

If you don’t have a lot of time at your disposal, a two-day city break is enough to visit the main tourist attractions.<\/span><\/p>\n

What we visited in <\/strong>Munich<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Known worldwide as\u00a0BMW<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Bayerische Motoren Werke AG<\/em>\u00a0founded in 1913 is headquartered in Munich.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Here you can visit the\u00a0<\/span>BMW Welt <\/span><\/strong>(<\/span>BMW World<\/span><\/strong>)<\/span> \u2013 the world’s most spectacular car dealer showroom, where you can see the newest models on the market, book a test drive or buy BMW accessories \u2013 and <\/span>the BMW Museum <\/span><\/strong>\u2013 located in a circular building where the history and development of the brand throughout history is presented.\u00a0<\/span>The price of a ticket is \u20ac10\/person to visit the museum, and access to\u00a0BMW Welt<\/em>\u00a0is free.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Englischer Garten<\/a> <\/strong>(English Garden<\/strong>)\u00a0is the largest green area in Munich, with an area of \u200b\u200bapproximately 4 km\u00b2.\u00a0From the vast meadows taken over by people relaxing, picnicking or playing football or tennis, to the interesting constructions you can visit (a Japanese tea house, a Chinese tower or a Greek temple) or the surfing area from the river Eisbach, you can’t get bored in this huge park.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, there is no shortage of beer here: there are several terraces where you can find drinks and traditional food.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Residenzmuseum<\/span><\/strong> served as the seat of government and residence of Bavarian dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. Over the centuries it was transformed by rulers into a magnificent palace, its buildings and gardens expanding further into the city.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The rooms and art collections span a period that begins with the Renaissance and extends through the Baroque and early Rococo eras to Neoclassicism, making it one of the largest museum complexes in Bavaria.\u00a0The price of a\u00a0<\/span>ticket<\/span><\/a>\u00a0varies from \u20ac7 to \u20ac17\/person, depending on how many sights you choose to visit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of the season,\u00a0Marienplatz<\/strong>\u00a0is full of locals and tourists.\u00a0The square has been in the heart of the city since the 12th century and is dominated by imposing attractions, including the\u00a0Neues Rathaus<\/em> (New Town Hall<\/em>), the\u00a0Altes Rathaus<\/em> (Old Town Hall<\/em>) and the\u00a0Mariens\u00e4ule (St. Mary’s Column)<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a monument that recalls the withdrawal of Swedish troops from Munich during the 30 Years’ War.\u00a0The gilded statue at the top depicts the Virgin Mary as the “Queen of Heaven<\/em>” \u2013 the patroness of Bavaria.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Neues Rathaus <\/span><\/strong>(<\/span>New Town Hall<\/span><\/strong>)<\/span>\u00a0in Marienplatz is a Gothic Revival marvel and one of the city’s most important attractions thanks to its highly decorated facade.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

For most visitors, the\u00a0Glockenspiel<\/em>\u00a0(mechanical clock) in the town hall tower captures most of the attention.\u00a0From March to October, the famous clock chimes every day at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., when the 43 bells ring and more than 30 figurines fight, sing or dance, creating a real spectacle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Glyptothek<\/strong>\u00a0is a neoclassical temple built by order of King Ludwig I as a repository for his collection of Greek and Roman sculptures.\u00a0The building was completed in 1830, making it the oldest museum in the city.\u00a0Today it houses more than 1000 years of sculpture, spanning the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Allianz Arena<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 home of Germany’s top team,\u00a0FC Bayern<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 is covered in 2,874 light panels that light up in the club’s colors on match days.\u00a0You can take a one-hour guided tour of the changing rooms, players’ tunnel and press conference room.\u00a0The price<\/a>\u00a0of a combined ticket is 19\u20ac\/person, and the itinerary or other details can be found on\u00a0the official website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theatinerkirche St.\u00a0Kajetan<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a basilica built in the Italian Baroque style, with a stunning facade and a richly decorated interior.\u00a0It was built in 1690, with two twin towers and a massive 71-meter dome.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum<\/strong> offers a unique exhibition of the history of land transport in its three themed halls: “Urban Traffic<\/em>“, “Travel<\/em>” and “Mobility and Technology<\/em>“.\u00a0The price of a\u00a0ticket<\/a>\u00a0is 7\u20ac\/person.<\/span><\/p>\n

Olympiapark<\/strong>\u00a0was the home of the 1972 Summer Olympics, being a former training ground for the Royal Bavarian Army.\u00a0It is now a major leisure center and hosts a variety of events and concerts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Inside the park is the\u00a0Olympiaturm<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a 291-meter-tall television tower built in 1968, which was renamed in honor of the Olympic Games.\u00a0To go up to the viewing platform that offers views of the city and the park you have to pay a\u00a0ticket<\/a>\u00a0of 9\u20ac\/person.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Peterskirche<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Saint Peter’s Cathedral<\/span><\/strong>) dates from the 12th century, being the oldest church in the city.\u00a0<\/span>If you come here on a clear day I recommend climbing the 90 meter high tower from where you can admire the amazing view of the Bavarian Alps and Marienplatz.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were lucky to catch a sunny day and as you can see in the pictures, the scenery is stunning.\u00a0The interior of the church can be visited for free, and to climb the tower you have to pay a fee of \u20ac3\/person.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

A few minutes’ walk from\u00a0Marienplatz<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0Schloss Nymphenburg<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The rooms are decorated in their original style: baroque, rococo or neoclassical.\u00a0Apart from the palace you can visit the palace stables which house a museum of ancient carriages and royal sleighs, the impressive porcelain collection and the gardens surrounding the palace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The price of a combined\u00a0ticket<\/a>\u00a0(palace, Carriage Museum, Porcelain Museum and park palaces:\u00a0Amalienburg, Badenburg, Pagodenburg, Magdalenenklause)<\/em>\u00a0is \u20ac15\/person (April 1 \u2013 October 15) or \u20ac12\/person (October 16 \u2013 March 31).\u00a0The palace park is closed during the winter.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can’t talk about Munich without mentioning\u00a0<\/span>Oktoberfest<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 one of the biggest festivals in the world that attracts over seven million visitors and millions of liters of beer are consumed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival<\/a>\u00a0starts on the third Saturday of September and ends on the first Sunday of October, where each brewery in Munich builds a temporary structure with a capacity of 6,000 people.\u00a0On the first day of the festival there is a parade where the breweries and folk costumes are presented.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

A short distance from Munich, in Oberschlei\u00dfheim, is\u00a0the Schleissheim Complex<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0comprising the\u00a0New Palace<\/em>, the\u00a0Old Palace,\u00a0<\/em>the Lustheim Palace<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0the Baroque Garden<\/em>.\u00a0The New Palace has a baroque facade 330 meters long and houses 45 rooms \u2013 galleries containing masterpieces from the European Baroque era.\u00a0Lustheim Palace houses a porcelain collection and the Old Palace has been transformed into a museum of religious art.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

If you arrive in Oberschlei\u00dfheim, also stop by the\u00a0Deutsches Museum Flugwerft<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 an aircraft museum comprising two buildings: the maintenance hangar, with the historical part of the museum and the command station, and the new exhibition hall, with the restoration workshop.\u00a0Ticket<\/a> price: \u20ac7\/person.<\/span><\/p>\n

We first went to Munich in 2015 as part of a roughly two week trip through Europe. We left Romania for Budapest, then visited Vienna<\/a>, Prague, Munich and Bratislava.\u00a0Since 2015 we have visited Munich 3 or 4 times and each time we come back with love and it surprises us with the friendly atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n
