De Haar<\/strong>\u00a0is the largest castle in the\u00a0Netherlands<\/em>\u00a0located just outside\u00a0Utrecht<\/em>, in the town of\u00a0Haarzuilens<\/em>, half an hour’s drive from\u00a0Amsterdam<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Few of\u00a0Holland<\/em>‘s castles can match De Haar for the ideal image of a medieval fortress with towers, moats and gates.\u00a0Like a real fairytale castle it rises majestically from the park with impressive trees, old gardens and ponds and is among the top 20 most visited tourist attractions in the Netherlands.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The current building was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of an old medieval castle.\u00a0The\u00a0De Haar <\/strong>family received the castle and its surroundings in 1391 and remained in possession until 1440, when the last member of the family died without issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Architect\u00a0<\/span>Pierre Cuypers<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(who designed the\u00a0<\/span>Rijksmuseum<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Amsterdam<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0Central<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>Station<\/span><\/em>) restored and rebuilt\u00a0<\/span>De Haar<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0for Baron\u00a0<\/span>\u00c9tienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span>The reconstruction lasted from 1892 to 1912 and was a unique project of its kind in all of\u00a0Europe<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
