Located in the state of\u00a0Saxony<\/em>, 30 kilometers from the border with the\u00a0Czech Republic<\/em>, the city of\u00a0Dresden <\/strong>is surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes that\u00a0Germany<\/em>\u00a0can boast\u00a0of, 60% of its surface being covered by forests and green spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the\u00a0<\/span>Second World War<\/span><\/em>\u00a0it suffered significant destruction, but today it boasts a vibrant cultural life, with many of the tourist attractions restored to their former glory.\u00a0<\/span>Its historic buildings have been reconstructed based on images and photographs, even using pieces from the ruins of the original constructions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Church of Our Lady<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Frauenkirche<\/span><\/strong>) was completely destroyed during the war and rebuilt based on its original 1720 plans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1990, the reconstruction began, with around 4000 original stones from the original church being used.\u00a0<\/span>In 2005 it was reopened and became a popular attraction in\u00a0Dresden<\/strong>, in 2009 it was visited by\u00a0Barack Obama<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Like the\u00a0Frauenkirche<\/em>, the\u00a0Semperoper<\/strong> (Opera<\/strong>) and the\u00a0Theaterplatz<\/strong> (Theatre Square<\/strong>) were decommissioned in 1945.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Named after the architect who designed it,\u00a0Gottfried Semper<\/em>,\u00a0the\u00a0Dresden\u00a0<\/em>Opera House<\/strong> is one of the most respected performance venues in the world. This is the second opera house erected on the same location, after the first one burned down in 1869. The neo-baroque hall was destroyed during the war and reopened in the mid-1980s. On the facade of the building are statues of\u00a0Goethe<\/em>,\u00a0Schiller<\/em>,\u00a0Shakespeare<\/em>,\u00a0Sophocles<\/em>,\u00a0Euripides<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Moli\u00e8re<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Zwinger Palace<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is one of the most impressive edifices in\u00a0<\/span>Germany<\/span><\/em>\u00a0built in the 18th century in the Baroque style.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from the impressive architecture, the\u00a0Zwinger<\/strong>\u00a0is home to several of\u00a0Dresden<\/em>‘s state art collections. These include the Dresden <\/em>Porcelain Collection<\/em>, scientific instruments in\u00a0the Royal Cabinet\u00a0<\/em>of Mathematical and Physical Instruments<\/em> and the Gallery of Old Pictures<\/em>.\u00a0The latter display paintings from the 15th-18th centuries, including Italian Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Residenzschloss<\/strong> is a Renaissance palace, the former residence of the kings of Saxony between the 16th and 19th centuries. Like the\u00a0<\/span>Zwinger<\/span><\/em>, the palace is now a museum complex for the various state collections.\u00a0<\/span>Among the most important are the Ottoman art collection, the royal treasure rooms, the armor and weapons collection, the collection of sketches and drawings by great artists such as\u00a0Goya<\/em>,\u00a0Michelangelo<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Rembrandt<\/em>\u00a0and the coin collection composed of more than 300,000 pieces gathered from all over the world, from antiquity to the present.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Museum of Military History<\/strong>\u00a0presents German military history in chronological order over five floors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

With its 20,000 m\u00b2 of indoor and outdoor exhibitions and a stock of 1.2 million exhibits,\u00a0<\/span>the Museum of Military History<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is the largest museum in\u00a0<\/span>Dresden<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Transport Museum<\/strong>\u00a0houses an impressive collection of vehicles in its 5,000 m\u00b2, from steam trains to aircraft, ships and motorcycles.\u00a0Other exhibits detail the evolution of road transport from before the invention of motorized vehicles to the present day, and a third traces the development of railways.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Located on the banks of the\u00a0<\/span>Elbe<\/span><\/em> and known as the “<\/span>Balcony of Europe<\/span><\/em>“, the\u00a0<\/span>Br\u00fchl Terrace<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>Br\u00fchlsche Terrasse<\/span><\/strong> was built in 1738 as a private garden, then opened to the general public in 1814. Today it is one of the favorite places for both locals and of visitors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Museum of Communism<\/span><\/strong>\/<\/span>GDR World<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span>Communism ruled the former\u00a0German Democratic Republic<\/em>\u00a0for five decades, and its legacy continues to affect politics and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors to the “<\/span>Die Welt der DDR<\/span><\/em>” museum do not need to have experienced communism in real life to “enjoy” an interesting journey through the everyday life of\u00a0<\/span>Germany<\/span><\/em>\u00a0between 1945 and 1989.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0<\/span>Neust\u00e4dter Mark<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(in the newest quarter of the city) is the statue of\u00a0<\/span>Augustus the Strong<\/span><\/em>\u00a0wearing Roman armor and seated on a horse.\u00a0<\/span>Made in 1736, the statue is also known as the\u00a0“Golden Horseman<\/strong>“, being one of the most popular landmarks of the city.\u00a0Augustus<\/em>\u00a0was the Elector of\u00a0Saxony<\/em>\u00a0at the beginning of the 18th century, and he made\u00a0Dresden<\/em>\u00a0an arts metropolis of European rank.\u00a0The sumptuous baroque edifices in and around the city stand as testimony even today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Baroque-style<\/span> Katholische Hofkirche<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Roman Catholic Cathedral<\/span><\/strong>) is the largest church in Saxony.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The church was bombed several times during the war, with some exterior walls being completely destroyed and the roof and vault collapsing inside the building.\u00a0Meanwhile, the cathedral has been restored and can be visited with free entry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of the season,\u00a0<\/span>Dresden<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0attracts tourists from all over the world every year due to its authentic charm and cultural heritage.\u00a0<\/span>If you end up in\u00a0Saxony<\/em>, don’t hesitate to visit\u00a0Dresden<\/em> as well.<\/span><\/p>\n
