Today,\u00a0Leipzig<\/strong>\u00a0is among the most popular tourist areas in\u00a0East Germany<\/em> and thanks to its rich cultural and musical heritage it is frequently cited as one of the most livable cities in\u00a0Europe<\/strong>.\u00a0In 2009 it was ranked 35th in the world (out of 256 competing cities) for cultural, social and economic innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0<\/span>The Central Square<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Marktplatz<\/span><\/strong>) is dominated by\u00a0<\/span>the Old Town Hall<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Altes Rathaus<\/span><\/strong>) \u2013 a Renaissance building dating from 1556 \u2013 considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in the country.\u00a0<\/span>Inside the building there is a museum of artifacts and exhibitions showing the history of the city throughout history, from the Middle Ages to 1989.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Marktplatz<\/strong> is where the main festivals are held, such as the Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt<\/strong>) or\u00a0the Leipzig City<\/em> Festival (Festival City<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n

2. On the North side of the Central Market is the\u00a0Alte Handelsb\u00f6rse<\/strong> (Old Stock Exchange<\/strong>) \u2013 Leipzig’s oldest baroque building, currently used as a concert and event hall.\u00a0In front of the building is the\u00a0<\/span>statue of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(1740-1832), one of the greatest German writers.\u00a0<\/span>Throughout his life, Goethe was a writer, lawyer, botanist, politician, physicist, civil servant, painter and theater manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0<\/span>The Church of Saint Thomas<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Thomaskirche<\/span><\/strong>) serves as a place of worship as well as a museum dedicated to the great composer\u00a0<\/span>Johann Sebastian Bach<\/span><\/em>\u00a0, who was part of the church choir from 1723 until his death in 1750.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Next to the altar is the composer’s grave, and in front of the entrance on the south side of the church rises the statue of Bach.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0<\/span>The Krochhochhaus<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is the first skyscraper built in the city in 1928. On the roof of the 43-meter high tower is a bell and two figures who ring it in turn when the exact time is announced.\u00a0<\/span>The clearing currently houses\u00a0the University of Leipzig’s Egyptian Museum<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0the University’s Ancient Oriental Institute<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A group of characters from\u00a0<\/span>Faust –\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Goethe<\/span><\/em>‘s well-known work\u00a0<\/span>– were sculpted in bronze in 1913 and placed on the stone staircase leading to the famous restaurant\u00a0<\/span>Auerbachs Keller<\/span><\/em>, the second oldest restaurant in\u00a0<\/span>Leipzig<\/span><\/em>\u00a0dating back to the 15th century lea.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0The University of Leipzig<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the oldest universities in the world and the second oldest in\u00a0Germany<\/em>, having been founded in 1409. During the\u00a0Second World War<\/em>, more than 60% of the university buildings were destroyed, being later renovated and reopened in 1946. Famous students of the University include Wagner<\/em>,\u00a0Goethe<\/em>,\u00a0Angela Merkel<\/em>\u00a0and many Nobel\u00a0laureates<\/em>\u00a0in literature, physics and chemistry.<\/span><\/p>\n

7.\u00a0<\/span>The New Concert Hall<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>Neues Gewandhaus<\/span><\/strong>) is located near\u00a0<\/span>the University of Leipzig<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and was built in 1981, known for its excellent acoustics and paintings by modern artists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

8. The\u00a0<\/span>New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0has served as the seat of Leipzig’s city administration since 1905. The main tower is 114.8 meters high, making it the tallest town hall tower in\u00a0<\/span>Germany<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span>Next to the clock on the tower is the inscription “Mors Certa, Hora incerta<\/em>” – “Death is certain, the hour is uncertain<\/em>“, and the female figure above symbolizes truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

9.\u00a0Museum in der Runden Ecke<\/strong> was formerly the headquarters of the secret service and political police (STASI<\/a>) of the former\u00a0German Democratic Republic.<\/em>\u00a0Those who want to visit the museum can make up their own minds about the function, equipment, methods and history of the\u00a0Stasi<\/em>.\u00a0The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (except December 23-26, December 31 and January 1), admission is free (the museum is run by a non-profit organization).\u00a0Every day, at 15:00, a guided tour is organized in German or English (if there are more than 5 people), for a fee of \u20ac5\/person.<\/span><\/p>\n

10.\u00a0The Central Station<\/strong> (Hauptbahnhof<\/strong>) is the largest railway station in Europe (83,460 m\u00b2).\u00a0It was built in 1915 and is transited by approximately 120,000 passengers during a day.\u00a0The station houses 19 underground platforms, two of which were inaugurated in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n
