Marseille<\/strong>\u00a0is the second largest city in France<\/em> (after\u00a0Paris<\/a><\/em>), located on the coast\u00a0of the Mediterranean Sea<\/em>\u00a0and the country’s largest commercial port.<\/span><\/p>\n

The city was founded by the Greeks 2600 years ago, the name\u00a0<\/span>Marseille<\/span><\/em>\u00a0comes from the Greek\u00a0<\/span>Massilia<\/span><\/em>\u00a0which means sacrifice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Being a multicultural city, you will meet a mixture of French, Arab, Italian, Spanish and Asian, restaurants of all kinds, terraces, shops, in conclusion a complex city that brings together such different elements, but which managed to form a whole and to live together.<\/span><\/p>\n

What you can visit in Marseille<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Old Port<\/b> (Vieux Port<\/b>) is where the city began its port activity around 600 BC.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the Greek city then called Massalia<\/em>\u00a0(then\u00a0Massilia<\/em>\u00a0in Roman times) had built its city starting from this point.\u00a0The harbor was surrounded by two forts:\u00a0<\/span>Fort Saint Nicolas<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Fort Saint-Jean<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Above the old port is the\u00a0Le Panier<\/b>\u00a0district \u2013 the historic center and oldest district of\u00a0Marseille<\/em>, established by the Greek colonies in 600 BC.\u00a0The narrow streets lead us through time-worn buildings, few of which have been renovated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pastel-colored houses with brightly colored shutters and flowers lend a picturesque air to the neighborhood.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/b>\u00cele\u00a0<\/b>d’<\/b>If<\/b>\u00a0houses the fort built in the 16th century, when King\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois I<\/em>\u00a0realized the strategic importance of this place to defend\u00a0Marseille<\/em>.<\/b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Not having seen any major battles, the fort was later turned into a prison for protesters and anti-monarchists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If Castle<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0remained a prison until the end of the 19th century, before being classified as a protected monument in 1926. The place is also famous for its presence in\u00a0<\/span>Alexandre Dumas<\/span><\/em>‘\u00a0<\/span>novel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span>The Count of Monte Cristo<\/span><\/em>\u00a0– in which\u00a0<\/span>Edmond Dantes<\/span><\/em>\u00a0was unjustly imprisoned for 14 years, and after escaping he became the\u00a0<\/span>Count of Monte Cristo<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and took revenge on his accusers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The price of an entrance ticket is \u20ac6.\u00a0<\/span>For young people from\u00a0Europe<\/em>\u00a0up to the age of 26, entry is free.\u00a0The island can be reached by ferry, which takes around 30 minutes and costs \u20ac10.8\/person\/round trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Basilique\u00a0<\/b>Notre-Dame de la Garde<\/b> was raised on a hill, at the highest point of the city (La Garde<\/em>\u00a0hill \u2013 154 meters).<\/span><\/p>\n

Built between 1853-1864, the cathedral has an opulent neo-Byzantine style interior with a distinctive design.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The terrace in front of the church offers a wonderful panorama of the whole city, up to the old port and\u00a0<\/span>the Friul Islands<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The basilica is 1 km from the\u00a0Vieux<\/strong>\u00a0Port<\/strong> and can be reached by bus 60 or the tourist train.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cathedral of Major<\/b>\u00a0is in a picturesque location of the city and combines the Byzantine and Romanesque styles in a harmonious way, being the largest church built in the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cathedral can be reached in a few minutes on foot from the old port or you can take the bus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but it‘s <\/span>closed on Mondays.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b>The Longchamp\u00a0<\/b>Palace<\/b>\u00a0and Park\u00a0are located in the heart of the city, housing\u00a0the Museum of Art<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0the Museum of Natural History<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The building was built to celebrate the completion of the Marseille Canal made to bring water from the <\/span>Durance <\/span><\/em>River to the city.\u00a0<\/span>Longchamp Park<\/strong>, opened in 1869, is listed by the\u00a0French Ministry of Culture<\/em>\u00a0as one of the country’s most important gardens.<\/span><\/p>\n

The beaches of Marseille<\/b>.\u00a0If you are planning a summer holiday in\u00a0Marseille<\/em>\u00a0don’t forget your bathing suit.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can enjoy one of the city’s extensive beaches, most of which are perfect for families with children, as the depth of the sea is shallow and children can play freely.\u00a0In addition, there are courts or specially designed places for volleyball, soccer, surfing and many other sports activities.\u00a0Let’s not forget the beautiful landscapes offered by\u00a0<\/span>the Mediterranean Sea<\/span><\/em>\u00a0which frequently changes its color, sometimes being turquoise, sometimes dark blue.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of course you can find terraces, bars or restaurants on the beach in case you get hungry or just want to enjoy a refreshing drink.\u00a0Regarding transport, we advise you to use public transport or take a walk.<\/span><\/p>\n

The beaches are very easy to get to, and if you rent a car you risk being stuck in traffic for a long time (Marseille<\/em>\u00a0is a quite crowded city with narrow streets) or not finding a parking space.<\/span><\/p>\n

Borely Park<\/b>\u00a0is the perfect choice for a relaxing afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is located near the shore and covers about 17 hectares, including fountains, children’s playgrounds, small waterfalls and a lake.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though\u00a0Marseille<\/em>\u00a0is quite a busy city, we were pleasantly impressed by the friendly attitude of the people and the vibrant urban energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although it is one of the oldest cities in\u00a0France<\/em>, it is a cosmopolitan place that has a lot to offer: multiculturalism, ancient history, colorful heritage and last but not least the gorgeous landscapes, especially those offered by the clear blue of the\u00a0Mediterranean<\/em>\u00a0and the refreshing breeze.<\/span><\/p>\n
