Augsburg<\/strong>\u00a0is the third largest city in\u00a0Bavaria<\/em>, after\u00a0Munich<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Nuremberg<\/a><\/em>, and the second oldest city in\u00a0Germany<\/em>, after\u00a0Kempten<\/em>.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Being a small town, you need half a day or a maximum a day to visit the most important sights. Augsburg<\/strong>\u00a0combines medieval and modern architecture, especially the baroque, renaissance, rococo and neo-baroque styles, which you can admire from a short stroll down\u00a0Maximilianstra\u00dfe<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What can you visit in Augsburg?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The cathedral<\/strong>\u00a0is a Roman Catholic construction dating from the 11th century, but in 1978 archaeological excavations revealed the foundations of a church from the 4th century.\u00a0This is not surprising, considering that\u00a0Augsburg<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the oldest cities in\u00a0Germany<\/em>\u00a0and was the important capital of a Roman province.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Inside the church are the oldest stained glass windows in\u00a0Germany<\/em>, dating from around 1100, but also Gothic elements and paintings by\u00a0Hans Holbein<\/em>\u00a0(considered one of the greatest portrait painters of the 16th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

The Augsburger Rathaus<\/strong> (Town Hall<\/strong>) is located in the center of the city and is a symbol of\u00a0Augsburg<\/em>.\u00a0It is a massive Renaissance building known for its spectacular reception rooms.\u00a0The Goldener Saal<\/strong> (Golden Hall<\/strong>) is considered the most impressive example of the German Renaissance.\u00a0Unfortunately, the day we arrived in\u00a0Augsburg<\/em>\u00a0it was closed and we could not visit the interior of the town hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The 70-meter-high<\/span> Perlachturm<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0stands in the center of\u00a0<\/span>Augsburg<\/span><\/em>\u00a0, and together with the adjacent town hall forms the city’s most prominent landmark.\u00a0<\/span>If you want to have a superb view of the city it is worth climbing the 261 steps to the top of the tower.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fuggerei neighborhood<\/strong>\u00a0is the oldest social project, initiated in 1521 by\u00a0Jacob Fugger.\u00a0<\/em>67 buildings were built in the neighborhood where the rent costs less than \u20ac1\/year and a church.\u00a0The neighborhood is surrounded by a fence and has its own gate, and a fee of \u20ac4\/person is charged for the visit.\u00a0<\/span>One of the houses has been turned into a museum and can be visited.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Late Gothic\u00a0Church of St. Ulrich<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong>St. Afra <\/strong>was built on the site of a Roman temple \u2013 one of the 40 self-governing imperial monasteries of the Holy Roman Empire.\u00a0Saints Ulrich\u00a0and\u00a0Afra\u00a0are the patron saints of\u00a0Augsburg<\/em>, and their tombs are inside the basilica.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fountain of Hercules<\/strong>\u00a0is located on\u00a0Maximilianstra\u00dfe<\/strong>\u00a0and is a statuary group executed in bronze between 1596-1600.\u00a0During the Baroque period, Augsburg<\/em> was one of the richest and most developed cities in\u00a0Europe<\/strong>, and\u00a0Hercules<\/em>‘ fight with the Hydra<\/em>\u00a0(snake-shaped water monster from Greek and Roman mythology) is a symbol of the city’s success.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Weberhaus<\/strong>\u00a0catches the eye of passers-by thanks to its beautifully painted facade.\u00a0In the past (14th century) it served as a center of the medieval textile trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Fuggerh<\/strong>\u00e4user.\u00a0<\/strong>Between 1512 and 1515\u00a0Jakob Fugger the Younger<\/em>\u00a0designed and built two linked houses on\u00a0Via Claudia <\/em>(today\u00a0Maximilianstra\u00dfe<\/em>), modeled on the buildings he encountered on his travels in Italy.\u00a0The original building was the first Renaissance style construction\u00a0north of the Alps<\/em>.\u00a0In 1517 he bought other neighboring houses and integrated them into the complex.\u00a0The exterior facade is one of the longest on\u00a0Maximilianstra\u00dfe<\/em>\u00a0and shows the wealth of the\u00a0Fugger<\/em> family.\u00a0Inside the complex were created four courtyards with arcades, columns clad in Tuscan marble and pools of water.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Maximilianstra\u00dfe<\/strong>\u00a0is considered a notable example of art history.\u00a0It was established here in 15 BC.\u00a0Via Claudia Augusta<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 road that connected the old Roman settlement with\u00a0Italy<\/em>, and as I wrote at the beginning of the article, a short walk on this street is like traveling in the past, on both sides meeting Gothic and Renaissance buildings, neo-classic or post-war.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Other tourist attractions:\u00a0<\/span>Mozart’s House<\/span><\/strong> (L<\/em><\/span>udwig Mozart – <\/span><\/em>Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/span><\/em>‘s father<\/span>, was born in 1719 in <\/span>Augsburg<\/span><\/em>. In the house where he lived, books, musical instruments, letters and other personal objects are exhibited today); <\/span>the Zoo<\/span><\/strong> (includes about 1,600 animals, birds and reptiles of 300 species and is home to several endangered species); <\/span>the Botanical Garden<\/span><\/strong> (is spread over 10 hectares and has over 3,000 species of plants, herbs and trees. The greenhouse inside the park contains almost 1,200 plants, a herb garden, a Japanese garden, a rose garden and a vegetable garden); <\/span>Augsburger Puppenkiste <\/span><\/strong>(the Augsburg<\/em>\u00a0puppet theater\u00a0<\/em>became famous in the 1950s when plays began to be broadcast on German television).<\/span><\/p>\n

If you arrive in the\u00a0Munich<\/em><\/a> area, do not hesitate to visit the city of\u00a0Augsburg<\/em>, which is approximately 80 km away and is considered part of the metropolitan area of \u200b\u200bthe Bavarian capital.<\/span><\/p>\n
